Our Story
OUR FOUNDER
Mr. Sello Hatang
Founder & Executive Director
Sello Hatang is the former Chief
Executive Officer of the Nelson
Mandela Foundation who served
15 years at the organisation and
ten of those as CEO. Sello Hatang
played a significant role in
promoting the legacy and values
of Nelson Mandela, the former
President of South Africa and
renowned anti-apartheid activist.
Sello Hatang dedicates himself to
advancing social justice, human
rights, and reconciliation in South
Africa and beyond.
During his tenure as the CEO of
the Nelson Mandela Foundation,
Sello Hatang focused on various
initiatives to uphold Mandela’s
ideals. These included promoting
dialogue and understanding
among different communities,
advocating for education and
youth development, and
fostering sustainable peace and
social cohesion. He has also been
involved in preserving the legacy
of Nelson Mandela through
archival work, exhibitions, and
educational programs.
Sello Hatang has been privileged
to host global leaders such as
Presidents Thabo Mbeki and
Barack Obama, UN Secretary
General António Guterres, Kevin
Hart and Prime Minister Mia
Mottley to name but a few. He is
known for his engaging and
inspiring speeches which touch
upon critical issues that are
crucial to the growth and
development of communities.
Hatang has also addressed
diverse audiences around the
world on topics such as building
an inclusive society, developing
new leaders, equality, building a
hopeful society in times
of despair, archives, and records
management.
Hatang’s leadership and
commitment to social change has
made him a respected figure
both nationally and
internationally. His efforts
continue to inspire individuals
and organisations to work
towards a more just and inclusive
society. He holds a postgraduate
qualification in heritage studies
from Wits University. His
commitment to community
service is clear in his work as the
founder and executive director of
Re Hata Mmoho. He has climbed
Mount Kilimanjaro five times as
part of the Caring4Girls initiative,
which provides sanitary towels to
girls so that they do not miss
school.
With an illustrious career
spanning over 20 years, Hatang
has worked in various roles in the
field of leadership, community
service, and social change.
Previously he was the Head of
Information Communications
and spokesperson for the South
African Human Rights
Commission. He participated in
the post-1994 transformation of
the National Archives, including
providing archival support for
the Truth and Reconciliation
Commission, and is a former
Director of the South African
History Archive (SAHA) at Wits
University. He serves on the
board of Women4Girls and is
former board member of SAHA
and the Open Democracy Advice
Centre. He is a founding member
and member of the Advisory
Council of the Council for the
Advancement of the South
African Constitution (CASAC). He
was a member of the editorial
team for Nelson Mandela’s book
Conversations with Myself and
co-editor of Nelson Mandela: By
Himself: The Authorised Book of
Quotations. He co-authored a
book: Nelson Mandela: I Know
This to be True. He is a 2014
Archbishop Tutu Fellow.
Hatang is a compassionate leader
who is purposeful and believes in
grooming future leaders. He has
received numerous accolades for
his work, including the keys to the
city of Florence in Italy and a
special diploma from the city of
Buenos Aires, the capital city of
Argentina. His tireless efforts to
promote human rights,
leadership, community service,
and social change have made him
one of the most respected and
admired figures in the field.
